Positive: What a picturesque region of Egypt! Such a verdant, fertile landscape! We watched the sunset from the 2nd floor terrace and felt awe for the beauty and quiet. And once the stars came out the night sky was magnificent. The hot springs were absolutely wonderful and well worth the extra $10 charge. Our host, Mohammed, was very warm and welcoming. He served us an incredible drink upon our arrival: icy cold guava lemon juice. Delicious. He made a wonderful chicken dinner for us accompanied by a fresh, flavorful salad, rice, orzo soup, zucchini in a garlic dressing and bread. Dessert was a tasty sweet he made himself, a kind of doughnut. The property was one of the quietest we’ve stayed at. Breakfast was delightful; scrambled eggs were a treat, along with bread, jam, beans, cheese, tomatoes and cucumbers. American-style coffee with warmed milk was extra special to begin our day!

Negative: We were surprised by the extra charges. We have been in Egypt for a month, and everywhere we have stayed our hosts have been generous with bottled water. We have never paid extra for it. 20 Egyptian pounds per small bottle seemed steep if not inhospitable to our western mindset. Mohammed’s dinner was very good, but it was as expensive as the restaurants in Luxor. We did not expect that. We also did not expect hard beds or scratchy sheets for the nightly cost. We wondered if they had box springs and left off the mattress. I still recommend Bir Al-Gabal. It is worth the stop for sure.
